John Hardy AO

His Honour was sworn in as the 21st Administrator of the Northern Territory on 10 November 2014.

His Honour was born in Midland Junction, Perth, Western Australia, and as a child moved with his family to Broken Hill in New South Wales. He completed his schooling at Broken Hill High School, where he met his wife Mrs Marie Hardy.

In 1971, His Honour arrived in the Northern Territory to accept a pilot position with the South Australian and Territory Air Services. In 1978, he was a founding member of Airnorth, and in 1991 he founded Hardy Aviation with Mrs Hardy. His Honour was instrumental in organising regular public transport air services to remote communities across the Top End.

His Honour’s career has not been limited to the aviation industry. He initially trained as a radiographer and performed this role during the early stages of his aviation career. He worked at hospitals in South Australia, New South Wales and Broken Hill, and at the old Darwin Hospital. In 1975, he was Superintendent Radiographer of the Northern Territory.

His Honour plays an active role in the community and has had a close involvement with a range of organisations. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Darwin since 1983 and was President in 1997 and 1998. He has given his support to the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Australian Rules football clubs. Passionate about sailing, His Honour has twice been Commodore of Darwin Sailing Club and is a life member.

In June 2012, His Honour was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to aviation in the Northern Territory, and to the community. In January 2017, he was further honoured as an Officer of the Order of Australia for service to the people of the Northern Territory and as a patron and supporter of a range of aviation, health, emergency service and charitable organisations.

His Honour and Mrs Hardy have been married for over 50 years and have three sons, two daughters and eight grandchildren.
